The Fashion File - Violet Fern

Where would our angels be without the talented fashion designers making beautiful things for our children to wear. Our first fashion file interview is with Juliet of Violet Fern fame. Her fantastic designs and commission spots are highly sought after. Dollicieux was lucky enough to have Juliet give up some of her precious sewing time to do an interview with us.

How did you discover BJDs (SDs, Delf, CH whatever types you collect)?

A few years ago I stumbled across Asian ball jointed dolls quite by accident. I was actually searching for a character doll from the movie The Dark Crystal called Kira. My search led me to http://www.kiradoll.com . I immediately fell in love with these strange and whimsical creations. From there on I found websites like http://pygmalion.mda.or.jp and http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/~dhnoah/indexb.htm . On a on a trip to Japan I found a bookstore that had a whole section devoted to ball jointed dolls, mostly photo art. It wasn’t till I returned to Hong Kong that a friend of mine told me that she found a local store that sold dolls similar to those Japanese dolls that I liked so much, and so I was introduced to Volks for the first time. From there on I found Cerberus Project and other commercially available dolls.

What got you started in making clothing for them?

One of my primary reasons for wanting BJD’s of my own was so that I could make costumes for them. I thought they had the perfect look for the clothing that I wanted to make.

When did you first start selling your clothing?

Towards the end of 2004.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

In fantasy and Prisonic Fairytale(s).

What has been your favorite outfit so far?

The “Moundshroud” outfit. (seen on left)

What has been the most rewarding part of making clothes?

Being able to turn my thoughts into something tangible.

What is the hardest part of making clothes for your dolls?

My equipment can be a little grumpy at times. My sewing machine is an ancient Singer that only just barely manages to cough up one type of stitch and my overlocker (serger) is about as stable as a rat on strychnine.

Where do you usually sell your clothing?

Through Ebay and private commissions. Although in future I will deal through Ebay only as I need my time to be more flexible.

Who is your favorite model of your dolls (or any other model you may use)?

My Cerberus Project El’s. (Cyan Nideh and Lau DaNym)

Who is your “dream doll”?

Cerberus Project “EL”. El is the most perfect doll sculpt of all time in my humble opinion.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I also repair Playstation 2 consoles (Disc Read Errors be gone!!!).
